My grandfather got this new. Probably in the early fifties. It looks like the top is a glue-lam of some type so maybe a cheap Chinese built? I won't be offended if it is, it played for several years. At one point I was told it was a Gibson, so I wonder. There seems to be no markings and I cant see anything on the inside. I am just curious, as it hangs on my wall. Looks like a small independent builder to me. I'm not sure if China had easy access to figured maple in the 50's. Their materials are pretty bad now but back then they were in the stone age. |

Good point. I think he paid a pretty penny for it then. Not sure how much, but a lot for time. The body has warped so the strings hit the fret board, on the one end. |

Since you posted the Silvertone ad I'll say it's not as the tailpieces aren't anything alike. Kay or Harmony. But they're usually marked. Have you put a lighted mirror inside? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

It's has the appearance of a laminated top, inexpensive instrument, and even in that small photo it looks as though the bridge is about two inches too close to the tailpiece, so I presume it's not in use currently. I don't recognize the body contour - maybe European? |

The bridge looks exactly like the one on my fifties Harmony, but that probably doesn't mean much. I know that generally Harmonies had solid pressed tops and Kays had laminated tops like this one. The shape also looks an awful lot like my buddy's old silvertone, which was made by Kay. Back then even cheap guitars weren't that cheap, especially in Canada, so it doesn't surprise me that it "cost a pretty penny". If it were a better guitar it would probably still be playable; if it's a kay or harmony it was probably barely playable even when it was new. You should still move the bridge to the correct location though- it just looks wrong! |

Ok, thanks. This has helped. I think. And yes, I'm moving the bridge up, does look weird don't it. |

Could it possibly be a 50's Kay? Sometimes the f-holes can provide a clue but that tailpiece seems very unique. |
